Many companies have separate departments devoted to their quality assurance. A quality assurance system is said to improve work processes and efficiency, to increase a company's credibility and customer confidence and to enable a company to easier compete with others. Quality assurance system was initially introduced in WWII, when munitions were tested and inspected for defects after they were made. Today's quality assurance systems are catching defects just before they get into the final product.

International standard that a lot of companies use to guarantee that their quality assurance system is effective and in place is ISO 9000. Compliance to ISO 9000 is said to assure that a company delivers quality services and products. To follow ISO 9000, a company's management team leaders decides quality assurance objectives and policies. Next step, an external consultant or the company formally writes down the company's requirements and policies and how the staff can fulfill the quality assurance system. Once these guidelines are in place and the quality assurance procedures are fulfilled, an outside assessor examines the company's quality assurance system to make sure it matches with ISO 9000. A detailed report describes all the parts of the standard the company failed, and the company agrees to fix any problems within a specific term. Once the problems are fixed, the company is certified as is suitable with the standard.
